Bridge over the Jamor Creek, Palácio Nacional de Queluz 1998/1999 PROJECT: Bridge over the Jamor Creek PROJECT STATUS: Built LOCATION: Queluz National Palace, Sintra ARCHITECTURE: Madalena Cardoso de Menezes and Francisco Teixeira Bastos COORDINATION: Madalena Cardoso de Menezes PROJECT DATE: 1998 – 1999 CLIENT: I.P.P.A.R. In 1989 the architect José Caldeira, designed a bridge sing iron and wood technology to cross the canal of the Jamor river in the gardens of the Queluz National Palace, in order to provide access to the former pavilion of the greenhouse, which had been turned into a tea house. As the latter was never implemented, and with the consequent rare use of the former, the two fell into rapid deterioration. The bridge repair project considered proposals intrinsic to its use within the building technology proposed in the original study. This consists in the reformulation of the concept of the bridge as a stopping place to view the canal and its tiled panels, based on the use of the structural elements above the upper cover, as well as the creation of niches, which allow a pause at this point of the crossing. The two upper continuous covers of the bridge were made of wooden planks, which provided little resistance to the weather. This were then replaced by an alternative, which affected both the structure and its feel, with new linings of wooden strips, and the cover and backs of the seats, giving the bridge a new design and image. < Back to Projects |
